In Part One of our profile on street-artist Sarah Sculley, we look at Sarah’s early years and the part Queensland, Australia plays in her inspiration and success.

Sarah Sculley Street Artist

THE EARLY YEARS

Sarah, born in Minnesota, USA, grew up in Queensland, Australia. The Sunshine Coast is a  part of the world synonymous with a surfer culture every bit as much as its popularity with artists. Described by Sarah as “heaven”,  Queensland is also a place of opportunity for street artists, with murals becoming ever more popular with both businesses and private individuals, and local councils commissioning street art projects. And there are a handful of free-spray walls too! If only every city had such foresight. There’s also a burgeoning festival culture, like the huge Brisbane Street Art Festival (BSAF) which is held every year, as well as music festivals and events always on the lookout for live artists. As Sarah says, “Opportunity is everywhere.”

Sarah studied Graphic Design at Queensland College of Art and the Edinburgh College of Art before deciding to make the leap over to painting. Sarah’s experience in Scotland added a grittiness to her increasingly experimental artwork. This experimentation can be seen throughout her work today, which is in a state of constant, exciting evolution.
