In Part Two of our profile on street-artist Sarah Sculley, it’s her breakout time and Sarah’s time to shine. We talk to Sarah about her first successes, and who inspires her to create her own incredible and beautiful art pieces.
BREAKOUT
In 2007 it was time for Sarah to let the world see her art. Her breakout art show was a solo exhibit in Shanghai, China. Any concerns about whether her art would be well received were short-lived. The show was a sell-out and a complete success, affirming the beauty of her art form.

Following her time in Europe and the Far East, Sarah returned to Australia in 2009. In her own words, Australia is a “Beautiful place, where it is easy to connect with colours, shapes and forms from the surrounding natural world.” Sarah says she uses empathy as her creative superpower, using her experiences, both good and bad, to paint and connect with others. In Australia in 2009, there were very few female artists represented in the street art scene, and Sarah did not want to go out at night, painting the town with the boys . She wanted to do go a different way. She persevered with increasing her visibility as a street artist in her own right, and the rest is history. Sarah now spends a lot of her time giving back by supporting up-and-coming street artists learn how to run a profitable and sustainable street art business. Sarah says, “I’m trying to be the person I needed back in 2009.”
INSPIRATION
We asked Sarah if there are any other artists who inspire her. Here’s what she said – “Hell yes. So many artists inspire me. The Zookeeper and Drapl who paint massive murals throughout Queensland. Both are amazingly talented and have been so supportive. Dave Kinsey, an American artist. David Bromley, an Australian artist based out of Melbourne. Of course, Banksy is a favourite of mine - as we are both stencil artists. But their conceptual depth is so admirable. Clare Foxton is an insanely talented and fearless Aussie muralist. Rosie Woods - also from the Sunny Coast and taking the world by storm! I could keep going...”
Other inspiration came from her parents, albeit not in the form of encouragement. Both parents are medical scientists and were confused when their daughter wanted to become an artist. But, although they came from the scientific world, both parents are creative, with interests in photography and dressmaking. And Sarah says she has her “I can do anything I put my mind to” attitude from her mom.

In terms of support, Sarah names her husband and son as being her biggest cheerleaders, saying they are the helium to her balloon. They can often be seen at her show openings, and at the side of her huge murals, cheering her on as she paints.
