THE STORY

It was a warm Tuesday in the French Quarter of New Orleans, a little sticky but not too bad. It was Mardi Gras season, which means parades, marching bands, vivid colours, incredible food, and that Louisiana feeling that's too good to put into words.

There were so many people here at the Mardi Gras. I thought that there would be so many empty offices, schools with no pupils or teachers, unoccupied houses and empty gardens. Everyone was gone to the Mardi Gras. I smiled to myself and it got me thinking about all these empty places with notes left with the words, "GONE TO MARDI GRAS." I imagined these notes pinned and stuck in offices, school rooms, factories all across town.

I just wanted to capture this moment, capture the energy and the feeling from this time at the New Orleans Mardi Gras – the music, the smell, the colours, the happiness. And I wanted to bring all these parts together and design a creation, a single piece, a happy piece, a fun piece, a standout piece, a piece I could wear at the next Mardi Gras.

I can tell you right now, at the Mardi Gras, it's not so easy to find a place to sit and sketch. But it was okay, I had this special moment locked in my mind. I didn't even need to take photos. This moment, this feeling, this shear joy would stay photographed in my mind forever. I waited until the night time and, on returning to my hotel, I sketched out the piece, the special piece, that I would call "GONE TO MARDI GRAS."
