THE STORY

I boarded the plane to New York. I'd already started to design my upcoming collection, for which I wanted to include sweatpants. I wanted to get that vibe that few places have. I could list them on one hand, but New York is definitely one of them. I wanted to build that urban vibe into my new collection. For whatever reason, and I can't remember the reason, the moment I'd checked in to my hotel, I wanted to get into NYC and begin to design the new sweatpants. And so, I took out my sketchpad and pencils from my suitcase and headed out into the city.

NYC buildings inspiration for the A Sleeping Samurai Sweatpants

I wanted my sweatpants to have an urban feel along with a skateboarding aesthetic. I needed inspiration. And so my itinerary for the afternoon would be to walk to a skatepark, taking a route through the backstreets of New York. The route did its work on me. As I walked, the image of the sweatpants formed in my mind.  I only had enough budget to produce samples for one design and so I had to get it right. The pants will be gender neutral and be in a light grey colour, maybe even limestone. A neutral colour that will match very nicely with other pieces across our collections. I remember smiling as I walked. New York is so cool.

through the air, performing tricks. Seemed a happy place. It was a happy place. By now I'd designed the aesthetics of the sweatpants, it was now time for the more functional elements. The sweatpants should be ideal for skateboarding. A loose fit but not too baggy with elastic cuffs. Amazing quality organic cotton making the pants durable for skateboarding and yet soft and beautiful to look amazing for that evening out to one of the amazing eateries in New York. Sketchpad out and my vision came to life. As I'm sketching the piece, I could feel a little of the New York DNA being injected into the sweatpants.
